Safe Zone Workshops

What is a Safe Zone Workshop?

A Safe Zone workshop aims to raise awareness, understanding as well as explore topics of biases, privilege, and the lived experiences involved with sexuality and gender issues.

Both workshops (101 and 201) focus on conversations and  exercises that explore biases towards and comfort levels with the LGBTQ community. Each workshop is tailored to the specific participating group, whether that group consists of the staff of businesses and organizations, college administrators, residential advisors, Greek organizations, sports coaches and teams, and not-for-profit organizations, such as counseling centers and other state and local government employees.

Three key elements to every workshop are (i) exploring the effects of homophobia and heterosexism, (ii) understanding of LGBTQ vocabulary, and (iii) providing participants with tools for fostering ally-ship within their communities.

Safe Zone 101 Workshop

Safe Zone 101 is Pride For All’s introductory workshop. This workshop is designed to facilitate and encourage discussion on the topics of homophobia and heterosexism, to introduce participants to the most common and important LGBTQ vocabulary, and provide an introduction to issues of gender and sexuality.

The workshop runs for three hours (depending to some extent on group size and the level of interaction amongst the participants and the facilitator). While 101 covers all of the basic topics stated above, it also includes time for discussions to address matters of importance to the particular participating group.

Sample Workshop Outline:
  0:00-0:20 – Introduction/ Ground rules
  0:20-0:50 – Basic Vocabulary
  0:50-1:20 – Gender vs. Sex

1:20-1:40 – Break / Q&A section
  1:40-2:10 – Heterosexual privilege activity
  2:10-2:30 – Scenarios
  2:30-2:50 – Identity Time
  2:50-3:00 - Debrief / Closing remarks

While this workshop is designed for those with little-to-no prior knowledge or exposure to topics of LGBTQ sensitivity or gender awareness, this workshop also challenges for those comfortable with these issues to push their knowledge, understanding, and confidence with the issues further.
Safe Zone 201 Workshop

Our 201 workshop is a more in-depth exploration of the issues constantly  facing LGBTQ individuals and youth, and expands on many of the topics introduced in our 101 workshop. The advanced vocabulary and investigation of heterosexism, biphobia, and transphobia are appropriate topics for those groups looking to expand and further their knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity regarding the LGBTQ community.

Like 101 this workshop usually runs for three hours depending on group size and availability of the participants. The 201 workshop is also tailored to the specific needs and goals of the participating group.
